STAY IN THE WATER – STAY IN THE NET

Catch and Release - The Quick Guide

  • Use BARBLESS hooks
  • Bring the fish to the net as quickly as possible
  • Keep the fish IN THE WATER
  • Handle the fish as little as possible, and always with wet hands
  • Do NOT squeeze the fish (damages their internal organs)
  • REMOVE the hook, using forceps if necessary
  • Avoid ANY contact with the bank/peg, as this removes their protective slime/coating
  • Support the fish gently until it swims away
  • Do NOT repeatedly pull the fish back by the tail whilst waiting on recovery of the fish

Why C&R?

The objective is to get the fish to the net and back into the water as quickly as possible, to maximise it’s chances of survival.

Evidence shows that a prolonged ‘fight’ increases the stress levels of the fish, and reduces it’s chances of survival, especially when water temperatures are higher during the summer months

ANGLER’S SHOULD NEVER REMOVE FISH FROM THE WATER FOR UNHOOKING
